Koyambedu Wastewater Treatment Plant (India)

About

The Koyambedu Tertiary Treatment RO plant is India’s largest, most technologically advanced water reuse project and the first reuse facility in India to use ozonation for disinfection, a crucial step in the country’s plans for municipal water recycling. The project will boost water resilience and sustainability, making the city of Chennai the first in India to reuse more than 20% of its treated water – freeing up 16 million m3 of freshwater each year for the more than 10 million people living in Chennai.

The plant uses a multi-stage treatment scheme – including ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, rapid gravity said filters, and ozonation – and functions with an ultra-low specific power requirement of 1.88kWh/m3 to cut operating costs over the next 15 years. The DBO project also includes a 15-year Operation and Maintenance period.
